World Nature Conservation Day falls on 28 July 2025, offering a timely opportunity to enjoy a quality Scotch whisky while supporting a vital environmental cause.
In celebration of the occasion, Tamdhu Distillery has launched a limited-edition charity bottling of its popular Tamdhu 12 Year Old exclusively with Waitrose. Each bottle sold will raise funds for the Atlantic Salmon Trust, a leading UK conservation charity focused on protecting wild Atlantic salmon and restoring their natural habitats.
This unique single malt Scotch whisky is now available in selected Waitrose stores, as well as online at Waitrose and Waitrose Cellar.
Tamdhu 12 Year Old Charity Bottling – Whisky with Purpose
Tamdhu is a historic Speyside distillery, renowned for producing exclusively sherry-matured single malts. The 12 Year Old expression is no exception, matured entirely in Oloroso sherry casks for rich, full-bodied flavour.
This special charity edition is bottled at 41.3% ABV and retails for £50 (70cl). It’s presented in a gift box, making it an ideal choice for whisky enthusiasts and gift-givers alike.
Importantly, a portion of proceeds from every bottle sold will go directly to the Atlantic Salmon Trust, helping to fund vital conservation work to reverse the dramatic decline of wild salmon populations.
Why Wild Atlantic Salmon Matter
The River Spey, the home of Tamdhu whisky, is also one of the most important habitats for wild Atlantic salmon. While once abundant, these iconic fish are now listed as endangered in Great Britain. Across the wider North Atlantic, wild salmon numbers have fallen by an estimated 70% in the past 30 years.
Salmon play a crucial role as indicators of ecosystem health. Protecting them means protecting rivers, coasts and marine biodiversity.
This partnership between Tamdhu and the Atlantic Salmon Trust supports the message that healthy rivers are essential for both great whisky and thriving wildlife.
Distillery and Charity Leaders Speak Out
Sandy McIntyre, Distillery Manager at Tamdhu, commented:
“We are so grateful to Waitrose for working with Tamdhu to support this important cause. We’re excited to bring both our whisky and the Atlantic Salmon Trust’s valuable work to a wider audience of Waitrose whisky lovers. With World Nature Conservation Day on 28 July, this is the perfect time to leap into the whisky aisle at Waitrose and help a good cause while enjoying a great single malt.”
Mark Bilsby, CEO of the Atlantic Salmon Trust, added:
“Wild Atlantic salmon are an amazing species, acting as natural indicators of river health, yet they are facing extinction. The support from Ian Macleod Distillers and Tamdhu enables us to focus our efforts on understanding the challenges and restoring habitats to give salmon a future. By working together, we can all help protect this vital species.”
Conservation in Action
Proceeds from Tamdhu 12 Year Old charity sales will directly support the Atlantic Salmon Trust’s core activities, including:
Restoration of rivers and catchments
Removal of barriers to fish migration
Planting of native riverside woodlands
Peatland and wetland rehabilitation
Scientific research to monitor salmon migration and survival
This on-the-ground work aims to improve conditions for salmon and other wildlife, while also contributing to climate resilience and water quality improvements.
