At The Cask Connoisseur, while our main focus is on whisky, we’re happy to shine a light on gin—especially since the two are more closely related than you might think. Many whisky distilleries, both old and new, also produce gin, with Bruichladdich on Islay being a prime example. Both spirits share a similar calorie count per measure and contain few carbs, making them a lighter indulgence for those watching their waistline during a night out (though still very much a treat!).
The Rise of Whisky and Gin Distilleries
Over the past decade, the number of whisky distilleries in the UK has more than doubled, growing from around 140 to approximately 300. Building a new distillery is no small feat—it’s an expensive endeavour. The challenge for whisky distilleries is that whisky must mature in the cask for at least three years before it can even be called whisky, which leaves a financial gap during that ageing process.
Enter gin, a perfect solution to keep distilleries running. With similar production methods and the ability to use the same stills, gin can be produced and ready to sell in as little as a week, helping distilleries maintain cash flow. The recent boom in whisky distilling has arguably contributed to the flourishing of gin production, with roughly one gin distillery for every whisky distillery.
Our Favorite Gins – Perfect for Gin & Tonic Day
In honour of Gin & Tonic Day, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite gins, many of which are crafted by whisky distilleries. While tonic is a classic mixer, some of these gins pair beautifully with other accompaniments.
- The Botanist (£37, ABV 46%) – Bruichladdich Distillery
Best served with tonic or as a dry martini, The Botanist is a standout traditional gin. Crafted by the renowned Bruichladdich Distillery, it’s one of the finest examples of classic gin available.
Visit The Botanist - Signature Style Gin (£35, ABV 43%) – In The Welsh Wind Distillery
This artisanal gin from Wales is best served with tonic and a slice of orange. With a recipe influenced by Welsh history, it offers a unique and flavorful profile.
Explore In The Welsh Wind - Thirlings Dry Gin (£39, ABV 43.6%) – Ad Gefrin Distillery
A smooth and fruity gin, we love Thirlings Dry Gin served neat, though it also pairs well with tonic. If you’re a fan of fruit-forward gins, this is a must-try.
Discover Ad Gefrin - Old Tom (£37, 42% ABV) – Cotswolds Distillery
A rare gin that can be enjoyed neat, Old Tom is best served with orange peel. For those interested in variety, the Cotswolds Distillery offers several different flavours. Our favourite is the Hedgerow Gin (£40, 40.6% ABV), with its complex flavours, perfect when paired with ginger ale or sipped neat.
Shop Cotswolds Distillery - Stirling Gin (£36, 43% ABV) – Stirling Distillery
This small-batch gin incorporates nettles in its recipe and has won awards for its distinctive flavour. Stirling Gin celebrates the rich mythology and history of Stirling. Best served with tonic, a slice of orange, and a sprig of mint.
