The Glenturret Distillery was named the Best Tourism Destination for Northern Europe at the prestigious World Luxury Travel Awards 2023, and it’s easy to see why. The Cask Connoisseur recently indulged in a full day of luxury at this historic distillery, enjoying a guided tour, whisky tasting, and a dining experience at the Michelin-starred Lalique restaurant. Whether you’re a whisky aficionado or simply seeking a memorable getaway, The Glenturret offers something special for everyone.
A Day at The Glenturret
From the moment you arrive, the serene landscape surrounding the distillery sets the tone for a peaceful and immersive experience. During our tour, we got a sneak peek at the newly renovated Aberturret House, a six-bedroom guest house located just steps from the distillery. This luxury guest house, soon available for bookings, offers the perfect place to stay for groups up to 12, with the option of a private chef to make your stay even more indulgent.
For those looking for a more budget-friendly stay, The Cask Connoisseur recommends Merlindale B&B in Crieff, a mere five-minute taxi ride from the distillery. Merlindale offered the perfect base to explore the surrounding area, with its attentive hosts, comfortable rooms, and a delicious homemade breakfast. With double rooms priced at £126 per night, this charming B&B proved an excellent choice for our visit.
Exploring the Surroundings
Before our distillery tour, we embarked on a brief drive through the surrounding area, taking in the local beauty. Highlights included easy walking trails, picturesque scenery at the Sma’ Glen, and a visit to the source of the distillery’s water, Loch Turret. The stunning views and natural landscapes made the visit even more rewarding, adding to the tranquil atmosphere.
The Glenturret Distillery Tour
Our tour began with a visit to the distillery’s warehouse, where rows of whisky barrels lay undisturbed, waiting to reach maturity. The tour itself highlighted the blend of tradition and sustainability that defines The Glenturret. We even met the distillery cats, Glen and Turret, who were lounging by the stills, adding a touch of charm to the experience. Each distillery has its unique characteristics, and at The Glenturret, it’s fascinating to see how the shape of the stills and the subtle variations in the whisky-making process lead to such diverse and complex flavours.
Whisky Tasting: A Highlight of the Visit

Dining at Lalique: A Michelin-Starred Experience
The day culminated in a visit to The Lalique restaurant, the only Michelin-starred restaurant located within a distillery. The tasting menu, consisting of seven to nine courses, offered a delightful combination of textures and flavours. The seafood and venison were particular highlights, and the paired wine list was a perfect match for each dish. At £195 for dinner and £115 for the wine pairing, it’s a splurge, but one that’s well worth it for a special occasion.
