Milkshake IPA – 4.6% ABV

It’s the weekend! That’s another week done and dusted and we are now coming towards the end of January.

I really hope you’ve all had a fantastic week and that you are all looking forward to a nice and relaxing weekend.

Now, the majority of the beers that I’ve sampled in the past have been truly amazing, but on small occasions, they can be times when some beers are just not fit for your palate, sadly this was one of those beers, I’ll explain why later!

Today’s post is on Milkshake IPA – 4.6% ABV!

History

Milkshake IPA is a traditional India Pale Ale that is brewed by The Leatherbritches Brewery, the brewery is situated on the county border between Derbyshire and Leicestershire, within the small town of Ashby-De-La-Zouch.

The brewery has currently gone under many relocations in its future and it is said to be one of the oldest breweries within Leicestershire.

The brewery was first established in 1994 and was first located in an old wash house which was behind a traditional pub, Bentley Brook Inn. The team at the brewery used a small 2BBL microbrewery to create some of the brewery’s iconic beers, some of these include the flagship beer Hairy Helmet, Ashbourne Ale and many others.

The brewery remained in the old wash house up to Autumn 2007 when the decision came that the brewery would close in order to prepare for a relocation! For the time being, all of Leatherbritches brewery’s beers were brewed at Falstaff Brewery in Derby.

Next, in spring 2008 the brewery reopened in its new location which was at The Green Man and Blacks Head Royal Hotel which is located in Ashbourne. The team remained at this facility for three years before relocating once more.

Leatherbritches Brewery now comfortably sits inside the Tap House within Ashby De La Zouch and has remained there since 2011, there are no current plans for the brewery to relocate within the future.

Leatherbritches Brewery at first started brewing a wide range of casks ales, these, of course, became increasingly popular, especially around Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Leicestershire! Majority of these beers were widely available in most public houses.

Furthermore, the brewery decided to adapt their brewing techniques and started producing a small range of Craft Ale canned products, one of the first which was produced was Milkshake IPA!

This was the first beer that I’ve ever tried from this brewery and I was truly looking forward to sampling something new which was different from all other beers that I’ve tasted in the past.

Tasting Notes 

Milkshake IPA is a hoppy pale ale which is infused with lactose which helps to increase the body of the beer to provide a creamier mouthfeel. A variety of hops are used to produce this unique looking beer which helps to deliver a real tropical refreshing drink.

Review

In my last beer review post which was on Sparks Fly Up, I mentioned that I bought a couple of new beers from a local beer shop which is located in my local town, so far I’ve tried Dessert In A Can and Sparks Fly Up which were absolutely phenomenal beers. It was now time to try the last beer, and I was so deeply excited to try it.

From doing some research, I managed to find a fair amount of breweries in the UK which produce a Milkshake IPA, some of these beers are stouts, hazy beers and sour beers.

I just knew I had to try something that was different, I mean being The Cask Connoisseur it’s all about trying different things and in fairness when I saw this can, I just knew straight away I had to try it.

As soon as I opened the can up, you could smell the hoppy aromas straightaway, it was a very appealing smell, but as soon as I tasted it, my heart sank!

The flavour was just really destroying, I mean it was refreshing, but it just didn’t have that juicy and creamy mouthfeel texture which was really disappointing.

The aftertaste didn’t bring much luck to the beer either, I found it quite sour and from trying sour beers in the past, my palate just doesn’t respond well to the flavour.

I was really looking forward to trying this beer and was extremely hoping that this beer would be delicious, sadly it wasn’t meant to be.

It can’t be helped, these things happen and they will be times when some beers are just not meant for your own self, I do hope though when I try my next beer, it will be more pleasing!

Ending

It is rare that I have to deliver a negative post, but on this occasion, I couldn’t bond well with this beer. I will admit some of my followers have probably tried this beer and enjoyed it, but my palate was just not accepting the flavour.

I am afraid that I can’t recommend this beer to you, however, if the flavour was slightly more enjoyable then I would have had second thoughts!
